I have eaten at Restaurant Tyler numerous times and the food as well as the service has always been outstanding. The shrimp and grits is one of my favorite dishes to eat- the grits are creamy, and the shrimp is always cooked perfectly.

Restaurant Tyler gets a solid A- across the board for me. The food is good, service is pretty good, atmosphere is good. Nothing struck me as exceptional in any of the handful of trips that I've made, but I wouldn't hesitate to visit again... especially if I'm not picking up the check.

I am a big lobster fan, so I had high hopes for the BBQ lobster--and it was amazing! Incredibly flavorful. Totally unique, for the same price as a plain old lobster anywhere else.

Notice How everybody in town suddenly has ca.$8 plate lunches. Wonder Why? Simple Chef Ty Thames found the price point and set it at Restaurant Tyler. Oh yeah and he isn't serviced by Cisco, so every thing is locally sourced, much organically grown. I mean seriously pan seared catfish with an array of interesting rotating seasonal sides and iced tea for 8 bucks no tax. Sign me Up!

Haven't had dinner there yet, but if I had to speculate: the best restaurant in Starkville period.
Every meal is a creative work of art. The freshly flown in seafood is always a good choice. Service has always been very good.
I took my wife to Restaurant Tyler for our anniversary and we enjoyed it very much. We were impressed that such a fine restaurant was located in Starkville just a few miles from our home. The service and atmosphere was as good as expected from a fine restaurant in a major city -- the live music was a nice touch (we came on Saturday). The food was very good but had lots of garlic. If one is not accustomed to eating lots of garlic it can cause indigestion for some people like me. In spite of that issue, though, I want to come back and try other items on the menu.

From the appetizers and main courses to the cocktails and wine, Restaurant Tyler provides a unique dining experience great for special occasions. While everything I've eaten here has been wonderful, the sweet potato creme brulee was divine. It's portioned for a group, so be sure to share!
This is one of the few restaurants in town with a pleasant atmosphere and professional service. The menu also has some ambition. Restaurant Tyler is a good place to go for a nice evening out. Execution is somewhat uneven, however. Some meals here have been great, but others have been distinctly not.
Restaurant Tyler is definitely one of the best places to eat in town. The cheese grits are great, and the Rollintini entree is one of the best steak dishes I've had. The sweet potato creme brule is another stand out on the menu.

If you've gone to my site, you know that I can't mention this restaurant without mentioning the word "butter" within three words. I should mention the word "cheese", too. I have carefully examined the menu, and I think there may be two dishes that don't involve butter or cheese.

My confession is this: Although the dishes are buttery and cheesy, they are never greasy. That takes nothing short of true genius to pull off. Oh yes, there are oils and richness and a need to drink some tea (thank you, tannins!), but never grease. And that explains why, after all my whinging about "butter", if someone suggests Restaurant Tyler for lunch, I say "yes". If they suggest it for dinner, I say "You're paying, right?"
I agree with a previous reviewer in that the food was very bland. Also, the portion size was small considering the meal cost $20 bucks. The chicken no bigger than the palm of my hand sitting on grits the same size with 3 pieces of broccolini on top.The service that night was also horrible. It took an hour and a half to get our food.I even tried to give them another chance and try the catfish for lunch. Again, it was bland and to top it off my fish wasn't fully cooked. I'm not impressed.

While I love the ambiance and the service was good, the food we had was extremely bland. It was glammed up by creating an interesting display on our plates, but the food was not that great. Maybe we didn't try the right things, but I wasn't impressed. To pay $20 for something, you expect something other than it just looking pretty.

I agree that this is possibly one of the best restaurants in Starkville. I went this past Friday and had the crawfish dip, shrimp and grits and the pancake dessert. It was the best meal I've had in Starkville.

Restaurant Tyler is possibly the best date night restaurant in Starkville. The crawfish dip is always fantastic for an appetizer, and while I my food has never been anything but amazing, my husband LOVES the fried chicken with crawfish sauce. The servers are so friendly and willing to make your dining experience the best.

I have visited Restaurant Tyler twice, and most other starkville restaurants mutiple times, and it is hands down the best in town. The grits are outstanding, try them!
bymbcd2814, December 5, 2008
Their lunch specials are great! The food is much like you would find at a Southern Home Cooked place with a small touch of up scale restaurant thrown in.

The artwork and the inside decor of the building is very unique as well.

The other reviews have it right: this place rocks. I've had to set a few people straight, though, about a particular item on the menu--the "bone-in cold smoked pork chop" is not actually served cold. That's just the way it gets smoked. It is awesome smokey goodness, like eating a camping trip (in a good way) and served hot.

Two other points:
1) How nice to have a restaurant that doesn't kill the mood with a TV over the bar;
2) Nice artwork!

Highly recommended.
Restaurant Tyler offers menu items that you can't find elsewhere, like a seafood pot pie that is great. The dinner special I had (fish) was one of the best ever, and the Cobb salad is great with the gorgonzola cheese. The veggies for lunch will definitely bring me back again; this might be the first time mac and cheese and mashed potatoes didn't need pepper for me.
bysbock, December 1, 2008
The blueberry salad is uniquely scrumptious! Love the atmosphere, too.
byrobyncain, November 24, 2008
I had my birthday dinner at Restaurant Tyler and it was awesome!!! The service was good, food was good, and the stuffed pancakes were fabulous!!! Will definitely be back.
