I must admit, I did not know Unknown Hinson until today, and now I believe we all should get to know him better. This undead country & western legend has chosen Dave's Darkhorse as the start of a new string of tour dates and he will be here with his band on Thursday, Nov. 19.

Here is a taste of what is to come...

I know it's a scary thing, but it's time to put down the Guitar Hero and get out there to see the real thing. Local promoters have filled the fall calendar with some great live music to rock-and-roll your cares away. Here's a sampling of some of the bigger shows. Check out the StarkvilleEATS Eventlist for more, and if you know of something we missed drop us a line at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Aug. 27 Ingram Hill at Rick's

I don't know if they will play this one at Rick's, but I couldn't resist posting it here.

Oct. 1 Cowboy Mouth at the State Theatre

Cowboy Mouth is New Orleans rock n' roll. Annually presenting roughly 200 shows per year, releasing nearly a dozen records, and featured on TV shows and radio stations everywhere, Cowboy Mouth has been seen and heard by millions of fans worldwide. For more than 15 years, the members of Cowboy Mouth have preached and shouted at the top of their lungs the joys of being alive and the joys of being in and from New Orleans, sharing a slice of Mardi Gras heaven with fans around the world. As frontman Fred LeBlanc has said,"If The Neville Brothers and The Clash had a baby, it would be Cowboy Mouth."

Oct. 17-19 Johnny Cash Flower Pickin' Festival

Oh, it is on. The details are coming together right this very moment. We are planning events at several venues around town including some great live music, a songwriting workshop, tours of the "Starkville City Jail" and other legendary Johnny Cash hot spots, and of course, a request to the city of Starkville for the pardon of Johnny Cash for one more year.

Keep an eye on PardonJohnnyCash.com, Robbie Ward's Starkville City Jail blog, and right here at StarkvilleEATS for the latest details.

Oct. 22 Drive-By Truckers at State Theatre

This is the show I am most excited about. The Truckers tore it up on Main Street a couple years back, and although Jason Isbell will be missed, I bet this will be THE show of the year in Starkville.

Nov. 4 Sister Hazel at Rick's

This is the song you know from the radio, but Sister Hazel returns to Rick's in support of their latest release titled "Release."

Cody DickinsonPlease come support one of Mississippi's most talented musical families tonight when Cody Dickinson returns to the State Theatre with his new band Hill Country Revue.  The North Mississippi Allstar drummer and little brother of Black Crowes lead guitarist Luther Dickinson will play tonight's show just three days after the loss of his father and Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Dickinson, who spent over 40 years on the North Mississippi / Memphis music scene, working with such artists as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Carl Perkins, The Replacements, Ry Cooder, Alex Chilton and Big Star.

July 9 - Dave Matthews Tribute Band

As a musician who has silenced week night crowds at music clubs pouring my heart out with original tunes that probably never should have left the confines of my bedroom where they were written, I have been know to roll my eyes at the mention of "tribute bands" hogging the biggest stages, pulling in big crowds, making big bucks, living like rock stars, if only for a few hours a night. The truth is, I believe everyone has a band that they dream of being in. You know you let loose when you're in your car alone. Imagine making that into your job!
